Main Street Revitalization

The revitalization of Main Streets is a national phenomenon sweeping through the country and it is a welcome change for many of our urban, suburban, and rural villages. Local municipalities are ever striving to improve the quality of life for their residents, merchants, and visitors. Main Street revitalization projects seek to improve upon quality-of-life issues such as safety and mobility for all users, oftentimes emphasizing facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Good Main Street designs are built at a human scale versus automobile scale and are aesthetically appealing. Successful treatments include a variety of hardscaping and landscaping improvements including gateway treatments, an expanded pedestrian realm, textured and/or contrasting crosswalks, street trees and furniture, and context-appropriate lighting. The many benefits of “ Main Street” revitalization include increased economic and social activity and a greater sense of place.
